Mackenzie Browning - Keynote Speaker

3:00PM Lecture Theatre, Murray 299

Mackenzie Browning is a Canadian artist based in Hamilton, Ontario whose practice spans screen printing, book arts, and print-based sculpture. His work is characterized by a bold and meticulous aesthetic that often blurs the boundaries between design, craft, and fine art. Browning frequently transforms print into immersive, architectural forms, creating installations that draw on both material innovation and a sensitivity to place.

His projects explore themes of community, reciprocity, and care, often using printmaking as a tool to examine how we connect to one another and to the environments we inhabit. Recent works have incorporated sculptural paper structures, recycled materials, and collaborative processes to highlight the role of artist run centres and non-profit spaces as vital ecosystems for experimentation and engagement.

Browning has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work is held in the permanent collections of Baylor University, Virginia Commonwealth University, The Art Gym Denver, University of Saskatchewan, Open Studio Toronto, and RedLine Contemporary Arts Center. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from Queen’s University.

Presentation Description

“Printmaking, Presence, and Community: Building Connections”

The keynote will reflect on how printmaking and artist-run or non-profit spaces can be powerful tools for authentic community engagement. I will explore how we as artists can remain present and connected rather than performative in our practices, drawing on my own experiences with residencies and artist-run centres across Canada and the United States. I will also speak about how we can create balance and protect ourselves when offering emotional labour and connection to others, so that this work remains sustainable and reciprocal.
